[s. 660] : A village in Madagascar, situated on the S. W,. coast, 15 miles S. by E. of Tullear. Station of the United Norwegian Church in America, with (1900) 5 mi ionaries, 1 of them with his wife; 3 women mi ionaries, 20 native workers, 18 outstations, 18 day schools, 1 boarding school, and 100 profe ed Christians. SAINT CHRIS CHON A PILGRIM MISSION {Pilger Mi ionvonSt. Chris chon a be i Basel): This Society, organized first (1840) by Pastor Spittler of St. Chris chon a, as a mi ion school, developed about 1860, a well-known and rather ambitious project for mi ions in Aby in i a, one feature of which was the “Apostelstra e” (Road of the Apostles), consisting of a series of stations which were to connect Jerusalem and Aby in i a. The selection included Alexandria, Cairo, A uan, Khartum, and Metammeh. Only two, however, Cairo and Alexandria, were occupied, and the severity of conditions in Aby in i a and the 643 Sudan led to the giving up of the worlv. The institute continued, but sent its graduates to other societies and interested itself more especially in evangelistic work. Since 1895, however, it has resumed foreign work as a recognized branch of the China Inland Mi ion. It occupies (1902) 4 stations, with 5 mi ionaries, and reports statistics through the CIM.
