SHOWER MAN, GRANT

(1870), a university profe or, 6. at Broolcfield, Wis., s. of Hiram and Ellen August a Parker Shower man. He was educated at the University of Wisconsin and abroad. He was profe or of cla ics at the University of Wis. after 1900. In addition to contributing to leading literary magazines and philol. journals he was the author of: A Country Chronies 1916; A Country Child, 1917 and others. 1922), American sculptor; 6. in New York, He graduated at Columbia in 1894, and after some experience in law and busine adopted sculpture. Though entirely self-taught he won in the competition for an equestrian statue for Brooklyn offered in 1901, and executed also the Grant Memorial, Washington ($250,000). The Holland Society of New York commi ioned him to design an equestrian statue of ‘William the Silent.’ His other works include ‘General Williams’ in Detroit; ‘General Lee’ in Chancellorsville, Virginia, and ‘Jay Cooke’ in Duluth, Michigan.
