Gothic Language

Containing the oldest literature of the Germanic tongues, Gothic is of supreme philological im IMG:content-0360.png:[blocks in formation] portance. Its oldest elements are (1) Runic inscriptions on weapons: (2) words borrowed by other languages; (3) chief of all, the West-Gothic translation of the Bible, made in the 4th century by Bp. Ulfilas and partially preserved; (4) the Skeireins , a biblical commentary; and (5) a calendar and some East-Gothic signatures. Characteristics of the language are sonorousne , full inflexions, and an independent pa ive voice.
