ADAMS, CHARLES FRANCIS

(18071886), American diplomatist, son of John uincy A. (qg.v.), 6. at Boston, Ma achusetts. Studied diplomacy under his father at an early age in Ru ia and England, and returning to Harvard graduated in 1825. Studied law, and sat in the Ma achusetts House of Representatives and Senate. Sat as a Republican in Congre ; was appointed minister to Great Britain in 1862. He opposed the sailing of the Alabama, and succeeded in influencing Lord John Ru ell in stopping the Alexandra and two ironclads intended for the Confederate states. He left England in 1868 and sat at the Geneva Conference (18712). He edited the works of John Adams 1850-6) and the memoirs of John uincy Adams (1874-7). See Life by
