Simon, Mendorf, Bavaria, 14, 1763—blind, Bergamo, Dec. 2, 1845; famous teacher and dram. composer; pupil of Lenzi and Bertoni; lived in Venice as church-composer; 1794 prod. v. succ. opera “Saffo,” followed by 70 more; 1802, cond. Maggiore, Bergamo, and 1805, dir. Mus. Inst.; wrote a life of Haydn, treatises and verse; he is said to have been the first to use the orchestral crescendo in Italy; biog. by Alborghetti and Galli (Bergamo, 1875). (2) Richard, Salzburg, Nov. 18, 1877— Vienna, Dec. 1, 1935; ba ; studied at Vienna Cons., made début as “Hagen” at Bayreuth Fest., 1902; mem. of Vienna Op., 1902-35, singing wide range of réles, but especially renowned for his buffo characterizations, such as “Baron Ochs” in “Der Rosenkavalier’; Covent Garden, 1924; Met. Op., N. Y., 1927 (début as “Pogner” in ‘Die Meister singer”); also heard in Wagner and Mozart réles at Salzburg Festivals. (mir’-bérkh-ér),.
