Cape of n.w. France. Here the English and Dutch fleets, under Ru ell and Rooke, defeated the French fleet under Tourville, May 19, 1692, destroying 21 of their ships. This victory postponed indefinitely the French invasion of England. IMG:content-0997.png:[merged small][graphic][subsumed] seat of the Mogul emperors it was populous and wealthy. It has some fine ruins, and several modern colleges. Pop. ab. 177,000.
