Leopold, condr. b. Lon- don, Apr. 18, 1882. Father was a Polish exile, his mother an Irish woman; studied piano and violin as a child, and later learned several orchestral instruments; studied organ and filled position as orgt. at St. James, Piccadilly, London; his talent for composition was developed under the instruction of Parry and Stanford, and at 14 he won a prize for a choral work to be performed at St. Paul's, London; came to U. S. in 1905 as orgt. at St. Bartholomew's Ch., New York; after several years of service he resigned and went abroad, doing guest conducting at London and Paris; engaged as condr.
