She returned to Scotland 1561; was opposed by the reformers; married Henry Darnley 1565; became mother of James VI. 1566. Her marriage with Both well, the putative murderer of Darnley, 3 months after Darnley's death, caused a general uprising; she was made prisoner and compelled to abdicate, fled to England, was imprisoned 1568, condemned to death for complicity in the conspiracies against the life of Elizabeth, and executed Feb. 8, 1587.
