Coptic

A language supposed to be derived from the ancient Egyptian , but mingled with Archaic Greek ; it was spoken in the valley of the Lower Nile until the seventeenth century, but is now extinct. The alphabetical system greatly resembles Greek, with six letters adopted from the hieroglyphics. ⁂ The upper dialect is called the Sahidic or Theban ; the middle dialect is the Memphitic , and the language of the Delta the Bashmuric .
