gammon (gam on)

t. [ To fasten a bowsprit to the stem of (a ship). gammoning (gam'on-ing), n. [Verbal n. of gam mon2, v. t., 2.] Naut., formerly, a chain or rope lashing by which the bowsprit was lashed down to the stem; now, an arrangement of iron bands secured by nuts and screws. gammoning-hole (gam'on-ing-hol), n. Naut., a scuttle cut through the knee of the head of a ship, through which the gammoning was pa ed. gammon-plate (gam'on-plat), Naut., an iron plate on the stem of a ship for securing gammon shackles.
