Henry ( son of a small tradesman ). b. Birmingham 10 April 1851; taught riding by T. Stevens on the Ilsley Downs; apprenticed to Wm. Reeves at Epsom 1867–71; first rode at Wye meeting on Skittles 1870; headed list of winning jockeys 1873, taking 110 races out of 395 mounts; won the Derby on Mr. W. S. Crawfurd’s Sefton 1878; first jockey and trainer to Lord Rosebery. d. Epsom 17 Feb. 1881.
