JONES, JOHN PERCIVAL

(18301912), an American politician, 6. in ‘Here ford shire, England. He came to this country as an infant, his parents settling in Ohio. When gold was discovered in California he joined the rush and spent some years prospecting. For,@ time he was a sheriff of Tuolumne County, and from 1863 to 1867 he was a Member of the state senate. Shortly afterwards he removed to Nevada, where he entered politics as a Republican and acquired a great deal of influence among the miners, being elected to the U. S Senate in 1873, where he served continuously till 1897. During the Presidential campaign of that latter year he supported Bryan as a silverite, but in 1900 returned to the Republican Party.
