Hydrochloric Acid

—A colorle gas with keen acid smell. It liquefies under a pre ure of 40 atmospheres at 10° and solidifies — at 115° The gas is very soluble in: water and its solution behaves as a strong acid It is obtained on a large scale by heating common salt with sulphuric acid. Hydrochloric acid is used for producing chlorine; in preparing the chlorides of various metals; in dyeing and ti ue printing: in the manufacture of coal tar colors; in electroplating, a dilution is used for pickling iron and zinc; and for many other purposes. Also known as muriatic acid and spirits of salt.
