KNO,. SALTPETER, or POTASSIUM NITRATE (q.v.). It is found occasionally as a natural mineral in the soils of hot regions, as Bengal, Spain, Egypt, and Persia, where it is formed, after a season of rain, by the reactions between the products of decomposition of organic matter and of feldspathic rocks.
