Hogshead

(högzhěd.) [A supposed corruption of ox-hide.] An English measure of capacity, containing 52½ imp. galls., and equal to half a pipe. Hence, by an extension of meaning, a cask which holds the above quantity of any liquid. In the U. States, the capacity of the H. varies from 100 to 140 galls. [s. 458]
