ELLIOT

Walter Elliot, British politician. Educated at Glasgow Academy and at the university there, he became a doctor. In 1914-18 he served with the R.A.M.C. in France. In 1918 he was elected Conservative M.P. for Lanark; in 1923 he lost his seat, but in 1924, 1929 and 1931 was elected for Kelvin grove. In 1923-24, and again in 1924-26, Major Elliot was Under-Secretary for Health for Scotland; in 1926-29 he was Under 134 ELLIPSE Secretary for Scotland, and in 1931 Financial Secretary to the Treasury, proving himself one of the ablest debaters and administrators among the younger Unionists. He became Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries in 1932.
