Backstays

Stays usually composed of wire or hemp rope, leading from the upper part of a topmast, topgallant-mast, royal-mast or skysail mast, down to the chain-plates at the ve el’s sides; for the purpose of supporting such stick, preventing its inclining both sideways and forward.
