(pig’-ment) \_pingere, to paint]. A gases. dye-stuff; a coloring matter. Pigments may be in solution or in the form of granules or crystals. P., Hematogenous, any pigment derived from the blood. Hematogenous pigments are hemoglobin, hematoid in, hemosiderin, and the bile-pigments, which are indirectly derived from the blood-pigment. P., Metabolic, a pigment formed by the metabolic action of cells. Melanin is the type of metabolic pigments. 500
