pl. [Mod. Lat. sten (us); Lat. fem. pl. adj. suff. -ide.] Entom.: An old family of Brach elytra, now generally merged in Staphylinide. Very active little beetles with cylindrical bodies and prominent eyes; found in moist places. stěn-ö, stěn-, pref . [Gr. stenos narrow; cf. en steno in a narrow compa .] Small, narrow, confined; in a small compa . stěn-o-brăn-chi-sæ s. pl . [Pref. steno-, and pl . Mod. Lat. branch iæ gills.1 Ichthy.: A section of Siluride (q. v.), with one group, Dorad in a, comprising several genera from South America, and one (the most important) from tropical Africa. [SYNOD ON TIS.] The rayed dorsal. if present, is short; gill-membranes confluent with the skin of the isthmus. stěn-och-ro-mỹ, subst . [Pref. steno-, and Gr. chroma =color.] Printing: The production of many colors at one impre ion. Mr. E. Meyer stein described his method of doing this at the Society of Arts (Dec. 13, 1876). stěn-ô-cô-rō'-nine, a. [Pref. steno-; Latin corona a crown, and Eng. suff. -ine.] Zool.: Having narrow-crowned molar teeth. "It has been suggested to me that the contrasted terms of Din other i an and Hippo pot a mine types may mistead, through being supposed to imply a greater amount both of affinity and of difference than is intended.
