The name of a weight and coin in use! among the Jews. Thef weight of the shekel was about ^oz. in English avoirdupois weight; and the value of the coin was 2s. 7d. There were two standards of the shekel: the shekel of the sanctuary, which was used in calculating the offerings of the temple, and all sums connected with the sacred law; and the royal or profane shekel, used for all civil payments.
