A genus of umbelliferous plants, of the tribe Sese lineæ, established by Linnæus. Most of the species are referred by Bentham and Hooker to Seseli and Peucedanum. [B, 42, 180.]—A. ajowan [Wallich]. A perennial’ European species, of which there are two varieties: the var. a, hirsuta, with tomentose leaves, growing on the higher portions of the Alps; and the var. 6, mutellinoides, with glabrous leaves, growing at lower elevations, The fruit, often called the seed (semen dauci cretic i [seu candiani], seu myrrhidis annua, seu at ham an tid is creticæ), is oblong-lanceolate, about 3 lines in length, with a contracted neck.
