Colfax

SCHUYLER, (kōlfaks,) an American statesman, and the grandson of Gen. William Colfax, the commander of Gen. Washington's Life-guards, B. in the city of New York, 1823. In 1845, he established at South Bend, Indiana, a weekly paper called The St. Joseph Valley Register. In 1848, he was appointed delegate to, and secretary of, the Whig National Convention, which nominated Gen. Taylor for the presidency; and in 1850 became a member of the Constitutional Convention of Indiana. He was elected a member of Congre in 1854, and became in 1863 the speaker of the House of Representatives, a position to which he was several times re-elected. In 1868, as the candidate of the Republican party, he was elected Vice-president of the U. States, Gen. Grant being the nominee for President. In 1872, he retired into private life. [s. 205]
