Franco-German War

Originated in Napoleon III.'s jealousy of the increasing power of Germany; resolved on by the French July 15, 1870. The French had 300,000 men in the field, the Germans 640,000. Paris capitulated Jan. 28, 1871. Negotiations for peace began Feb. 22; preliminary treaty was signed at Versailles Feb. 26, a final treaty at Frankfort May 10. The Germans lost in dead 28,277; total killed and wounded 127,867. The cost of the war to France was $1,912,000,000. The last German soldier left French soil July 1873, the war indemnity of 5,000,000,000 francs having been paid. The various battles are mentioned alphabetically in this work.
