HILL, DANIEL HARVEY

(18211889), Confederate army general and educator; 6. York District, 8S. ©.; d. Charlotte, N. C. He graduated from West Point in 1842 and saw service in the Mexican War. He left the army for a scholastic career, and between 1849 and the outbreak of the Civil War was profe or of mathematics and military tactics at Washington College, Va., profe or of mathematics at Davidson College, N. C., and president of the North Carolina Military Institute, Charlotte. He joined the Confederate army in the Civil War, and as a lieutenant colonel commanded a corps at the battle of Chick am aug a after taking part in the Peninsula Campaign, as well as in the battles of Beaver Dam Creek, Gaines’ Mill, South Mountain and Antietam, and commanding the Richmond and Petersburg defenses in the Gettysburg campaign. In 1865 he surrendered to the Union forces in North Carolina with General J. E. Johnston, under whom he served in the closing days of the war. Following the peace he founded and edited ‘The Land We Love’, and became president succe ively of the Arkansas University and of the Agricultural College at Milledgeville, Ga.
