Absinthium

{absinth’ -e-uni) [L.]. Wormwood. The leaves and tops of Artemisia absinthium. A. contains a volatile oil and an intensely bitter principle, Absinth in, C20H28O4, which is a narcotic poison. A. increases cardiac action, produces tremor and epileptiform convulsions. Dose gr. xx-xl (1.3-2.6), in infusion. It is used as a stomachic tonic. Absinthe, a French liquor, is an alcoholic solution of the oil exhibited with oils of anise, marjoram, and other aromatic oils. 22
