(normal.) [From L. norma, a rule, a square to measure right angles.] (Geom.) A perpendicular to a curve at some particular point at which the N. is also perpendicular to a tangent. Normal School. An institution where teachers are instructed in the principles of their profe ion and trained in the practice of it. The first N. S. was organized at Stettin, in Pru ia, 1735; the first in the U. States was opened at Lexington, July 3, 1839. [s. 650]
