Memnon

Son of Tithonus and Eos (Aurora), who led the Ethiopians to the aid of Priam in the Trojan war. His name was a ociated by later Greeks with two seated colo al statues of A me no phis III. at Thebes, dating ab. 1500 B.C. They flanked the approach to a temple now wholly destroyed; they are about Colo al Statues of Memnon. 50 ft. high in the solid block, on pedestals 10 ft. high. One of these was partly overthrown by an earthquake 27 B.C. After this time singing noises, emitted from the statue at sunrise, were heard and mentioned by many travelers. The noises ceased when the statue was repaired by Septimius Severus. It is not known whether fraud or natural causes produced these sounds.
