(es-tāt'.) [Fr. état, from L. status, a standing.] (Law.) The title or interest that a person has in lands, tenements, or other real property. Also, the property itself, in which sense E. are either real, consisting of lands, tenements, or hereditaments; or personal, consisting of goods, money, and all other movables, and of such rights and profits as relate to movables. -E. OF THE REALM, the distinct parts which go to form the body-politic of any monarchical state or govt.; thus, in England, the THREE E. are the Sovereign, Lords, and Commons. [s. 342]
