Ammonites

plant Dorema Ammoniacum. (am'mon-ītes.) (Sacred Hist.) The descendants of the youngest son of Lot, occupied a tract of country E. of the Amorites, and separated from the Moabites by the river Arnon. They were almost continually at war against the Israeli tes. Justin Martyn affirms that in his time they were still numerous. Jephthah defeated them with great slaughter. They were also overcome by Saul, David, Uzziah, and Jotham; but after the fall of the kingdom of Israel, B. c. 720, they spread themselves in the districts ofJudæa on the east of the Jordan. The chief deity worshipped by the A. was named Milcon, who in his character seems to have resembled Moloch.-(Pal.) Agen. of fo il shells, nearly allied to the recent gen. Nautilus, Fig. 25.-AMMONITE. being, like it, chambered and spiral. The species vary from a small size to 4 feet in diameter (Fig. 25).
