Richard, an American naval officer; born in Norfolk, Va., Nov. 6, 1756; was sent to sea at 12 years of age, and at 19 had the command of a merchant-ve el, While serving as a midshipman on board of the American brig of war “ Lexington,” he was taken by a British cutter; but effected ‘his escape into France, where he joined Paul Jones, then commanding the American ship “ Bon Homme Richard,’ and was the first man that boarded the English frigate “ Serapis,”’ which was captured. In 1801 he had the command of an American squadron and hoisted his pennant on board the “President.” He died in Philadelphia, Feb. 24, 1826.
