ADRIANOPLE

cap. vilayet of same name, Turkey in Europe (41° 40’ N., 96° 33’ E.), on 1. bk. of Maritza, 198 m. W.N.W. of Constantinople by rail. Important commercial centre in silk, otto of roses, opium, wine, cereals, and to Michael, and great bazaar are chief features. Takes its name from Emperor Hadrian, who embellished it 2nd cent. cap. (1366-1453); occupied by Ottoman Ru ians in 1829; treaty concluding Ru o-Turkish War signed here same Entered again by Ru ians in year. 1878, when armistice concluded. Besieged 155 days during Balkan War but recovered by Turkey during second Balkan War. By agreement of the Powers in 1923 it was re-ceded to Turkey. Pop. 85,000.
