He was educated x the ministry, graduating from the rinceton Theological Seminary in 1874; and occupied the pastorate of a Pittsage Presbyterian church from 1874 1891. Afterwards he served as chancellor of the Western University of ennsylvania for two years. In 1897 he Was appointed director of the Carnegie cn at Pittsburgh and became an authority on museum administration d zoology. His scientific writings clude works on butterflies and moths on the fauna of past geological ages. (1871), economist; b. Baltimore, Md. In 1891 he graduated from Johns Hopkins University, where he became a ociate profe or of finance, and in 1904 profe or of political economy. Meantime, 1897, he acted as secretary of the Bimetallic Commi ion abroad and as U. 8. Commi ioner ofr tax-law revision in Porto Rico as well as treasurer for that island’s government. In 1905 he investigated the public debt of Santa Domingo for the U. S. government and later readjusted it as financial adviser for the Dominican Republic.
