(pon-toon'.) [Fr. ponton, from L. pons, pont is, a bridge. ] (Mil.) A floating bridge constructed of flat-bottomed boats, anchored or made fast in two lines, and used in forming a way over rivers for the pa age of troops. [s. 722]
