BERNSTEIN, HENRI

(1876), Fr. playwright who has attained great succe , especially with La Rafale (1905) and La Griffe (1906). thor, was born at Neustadt-Scherwindt, on the Ru o-German frontier of Poland. Both his parents were Ru ian, and with them he went to Mohilev in Ru ia residing there for several years. In 1893 he came to America, and for several ears acted as special correspondent in Prope of the New York Times. He visited Tolstoi in Yasnaya Polyana and fnterviewed some of the most famous people in Europe. He is the founder of the Jewish daily paper The Day, and for two years acted as its editor, and 1916 has been editor of the American Hebrew. In 1917 he went to Ru ia as special correspondent of the New York Herald and published the secret correspondence between the Kaiser and the Ozar. He is the author of The Flight of Time (poems), In the Gates of Israel, Contrite Hearts, and his interviews with distinguished people are collected under the title With Master Minds. He has also translated Chekhovy’s stories and plays, Gorky’s Foma Gordeyev and several of Tolstoi’s posthumous works.
