FRESH FIELD

Douglas William, English traveller, was born in 1845, and was educated at Eton and at University College, Oxford, where he graduated in 1867. He was called to 585 FRESHWATER the Bar in 1870, but devoted himself mainly to travel, having visited and explored Syria, the Caucasus, Armenia, Algeria, Corsica, and the Alpine and Himalaya regions. He published the following interesting and readable accounts of his journeys: Travels in the Central Caucasus and Bashan (1869), The Tialian Alps (1875), Climb s in the Caucasus (1888), The Forests of Abkhasia (1890), The Exploration of the Caucasus (1896), Round Kangchenjunga (1904), Hannibal once more (1914), and Below the Snow Line (1923). He was editor of the Alpine Journal from 1872 till 1880, and president of the Alpine Club from 1893 till 1895, besides being for along time one of the honorary secretaries of the Royal Geographical Society.
