Ancient mountaineers of n. w. Spain, supposed to have been of Iberian stock; subjugated by the Romans 25-19 B.C. The Basques may be their descendants. Canterbury Cathedral. is 545 ft. long, with a central tower 235 ft. high. Thomas à Becket was murdered here in the north transept 1170. Pop., 1891, 23,026.
