STERLING

The legal description of the English current coin, of which the most probable derivation is from Easterling, the popular name of the Baltic and German traders who visited London in the middle ages; but in what manner it came to be so applied is unknown. Camden says from the employment of German artists in coining. The silver penny was first called Esterling. [s. 1185]
