Bible

(bī'bl.) [From Gr. bib los, a book; The Book, by pre-eminence. ] A name given to the sacred writings of the Jews and Christians, found used for the first time in the 5th cent. by St. Chrysostom. The Old Testament consists of the five books called the Pent a teuch, and the Historical, Poetical, and Prophetic books; the New Testament of the four Gospels, the Acts, the Epistles, and Revelations. The earliest version of the Bible is a Greek translation called the Septuagint, and from this other translations have been made. The Bible was first printed in English in 1535. [s. 92]
