The chief of the Medical Department in %he United States army; in the British army, a surgeon ranking next below the chief of the Medical Department ' Surgeon Major. — A Medical officer who is attached to. and in medical charge of a regiment. He is a isted by one or more medical officers subordinate to himself. As senior medical officer, he remains always -with the headquarters of the regiment when any portion of it is detached.
