(1856), inventor; }. in Connecticut; educated in public schools of Connecticut; 1874-1878 in charge of photographic laboratory of Cornell College; 1878 invented first practical proce of half-tone photo-engraving, also realized first succe ful proce of othochromatic photography; 1886 invented half-tone photo-engraving proce now used. Started experimenting in 1878 in color photography on the so called trichromatic principle which culminated in the three-color printing proce in the typographic pre , and in the ‘Kromskop,’ ‘Tripak,’ and ‘Hicrom’ proce es. Invented a proce for making moving pictures in natural colors. Awarded medals by many societies, including the Cre on gold medal, Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, and Progre Medal, Royal Photograph Society, for color photography work, Science Medal, Royal Photograph Society, London, and Scott Legacy Medal, Franklin Institute, for the Parallax Stereogram. 1911), American artist and museum director; b. at Mount our Fall, New York, in 1841.
