a fabulous animal mentioned by cla ical authors as existing in India and as having a long, single horn on the forehead. The animal was supposed to resemble the horse in build and swiftne , though the origin of the fable is probably the rhinoceros. James I. adopted the unicorn as the sinister supporter of royal arms at Union of the Crowns.
