(Gr. f/^va-oe,, the generic name of the banana, and (pot-yu, I eat.) A genus of Scansorial birds, characterized by the base of the beak forming a disk which partly covers the forehead. The species of this genus are called " plantain eaters," because their principal food is the fruit of the banana. [s. 814]
