adumbrate

t. [Ital. adombrare, from Lat, adumbratum, supine of adumbro = (1) to cast a shadow, (2) to image forth by means of a shadow. From ad to, and umbra, in Fr. ombre, Ital. ombra, Sp. sombra a shadow.] Faintly to image forth, as a shadow does the object from which it proceeds.
