Harmony

Combination of tones in chords according to rule, or the regulating system thereof. It is a characteristic element of modern European music as distinguished from ancient, savage, and Oriental, and grew up about the 10th century from the practice of permitting different voices in a choir to sing parallel melodies at the interval of a fourth, fifth, or octave.
