(kar-tā'go,) a town, bay, river, and mountain of Costa Rica, Central America. The mountain, an extinct volcano, attains an elevation of 11,500 ft. The town was nearly destroyed by an earthquake in 1841. The river falls into the Gulf of Nicosa, and the bay, a large lagoon, connects with the Caribbean Sea. [s. 148]
