Mining

Complex of operations involved in working a mine; art of attacking, excavating, and bringing to the surface ma es of subterranean mineral matter, including the auxiliary proce es of supporting walls, securing ventilation, removing water, and providing for incidental contingencies. Many comprehensive treatises on mining have been written in German and French, especially by Lottner, Serlo, Köhler, Leo, Combes, Ponson, Burat. Haton de la Goupillière, and Call on. Of the more recent English treatises those of André on Coal Mining and Machinery , Foster's Ore and Stone Mining, and Hughes' Coal Mining are among the most complete. Drinker's Tunneling contains much matter of value. Outside of such special works as these, an extensive mining literature is found in periodicals, technical journals, and the Transactions of societies like the American and North of England Institutes of Mining Engineers.
