DER (1843-1916), Ger. soldier, com- ' monly known as Goltz Pasha; b. Bielkenfeld, EH. Pru ia; fought and was wounded in the Austrian campaign, 1866; became lecturer on military history at Berlin, and wrote his cla ic works, Ro bach and Jena and A Nation in Arms, 1883. From 1883 to 1895 he was engaged in reorganizing the Turk. army, and was identified with the Young _ Turk movement, 1908. The ignominious defeat of Turkey in the Balkan War, 1912, adversely affected his reputation. In 1913 he retired from the Pru ian army with the rank of field-marshal. - In the World War he was governor of Bru els, Sept.-Oct., 1914, and_supervised the defenses of the Dardanelles _ and the Turk. campaign generally.
