CHAUTAUQUA INSTITUTION

an educational organization whose seat is on Chautauqua Lake in the southwestern part of New York State. At its beginning in 1874 the Chautauqua idea was e entially that of an open air meeting or a embly devoted chiefly to religious study. But it has taken on an infinitely wider character and now smbraces almost the whole range of sducational subjects. Popular lectures, scientific and philosophical discu ions, oncerts, literary addre es all come within its scope. There are Schools of inglish and Modern Languages, of Clasical Languages, Mathematics, Sciences, Sducation, Music, Home Economics, Arts and Crafts, Expre ion and other ubjects. In addition it has an extensive ystem for home study and reading, arried on individually or in connection vith local branches.
