fistulariid (fistulariid)

A fish of the family Fistulariida. Fistulariidæ (fis tū-lā-ri'i-dē), n. pl. [NL., ate fishes, typified by the genus Fistular i a, and characterized by the very elongate and somewhat depre ed body, long tubiform snout, ventral fins with five or six spinele rays, no dorsal spines, and extension of the two middle rays of the tail-fin into a long filament; the tobacco pipe fishes or sea-snipes. Only three species are known, all of the genus Fistular i a, formerly referred to the Aulos tom ide or even the Centrixcide. In Cuvier's system Fistulariidæ was the fifteenth family of Acan IMG:content-1390.png:[blocks in formation] er, but also the Aulos tom ide, Macrorhamphoside, and Am phisilidæ of recent authors. In Günther's system they were a family of Acanthopterygii gasterosteiformes, with the ventrals remote from the pubic bone, and with six soft rays, including Fistulariidæ proper, Aulos to midæ, and Aulorhynchidæ of later authors.
