Dido

(di'do.) The legendary foundre of Carthage. She was daughter of Belus, and sister of Pygmalion of Tyre, who murdered her husband, upon which she fled, and purchased as the site of a new Tyre as much land as she could surround by a bull's hide. Virgil represents her as dying by her own hand out of love for Æneas, who visited her rising city in his wanderings. [s. 285]
